New protocols have been published following a consultation to refine the way to assess the durability of dual active ingredient bednets.<\/i>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

The development of\u00a0novel insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) has become pivotal\u00a0to\u00a0fight insecticide resistance\u00a0in mosquitoes.\u00a0In recent years,\u00a0the World Health Organization (WHO) granted the prequalification status to\u00a0several\u00a0dual active ingredients\u00a0(AI) ITNs. These new nets have been designed to kill pyrethroid-resistant mosquitoes by\u00a0adding a\u00a0second active ingredient to the fabric\u00a0which already\u00a0contains\u00a0a pyrethroid.\u00a0For example, the Interceptor G2 (IG2) nets contain the pro-insecticide chlorfenapyr. Other nets, such as the PermaNet 3.0 and the Olyset\u00a0Plus, use\u00a0the synergist\u00a0piperonyl butoxide (PBO).\u00a0The Royal Guard net, on the other hand,\u00a0contains\u00a0the insect growth regulator\u00a0pyriproxyfen (PPF).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and pilot deployment schemes\u00a0are currently deploying these new nets\u00a0to test their efficacy.\u00a0During these studies, the durability of the nets (i.e. how long they effectively kill mosquitoes) is assessed by\u00a0collecting net samples over time. These samples\u00a0are then\u00a0tested\u00a0in bioassays\u00a0using both insecticide-susceptible and resistant mosquitoes.\u00a0However,\u00a0the existing bioassays were developed to measure the durability of pyrethroid-only nets, and need adaptions and validation to measure the durability of nets containing secondary active ingredients. There is therefore a\u00a0need to optimize\u00a0these standard operating procedures (SOPs)\u00a0further and reach an agreement on how to perform and interpret\u00a0bioassays\u00a0for\u00a0assessing the nets\u2019 durability. In particular, bioassay\u00a0endpoints\u00a0should be capable of detecting\u00a0changes in\u00a0the\u00a0active ingredient bioefficacy over time\u00a0(sensitive)\u00a0but at the same time easy to measure (practical).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Following\u00a0a recent consultation\u00a0of\u00a0relevant\u00a0stakeholders,\u00a0of\u00a0university researchers,\u00a0research organisations\u00a0involved in ITNs\u00a0durability monitoring studies,\u00a0and\u00a0procurement bodies, a new proposed set of guidelines and SOPs for assessing the durability of\u00a0several\u00a0 dual-AI ITNs was agreed.\u00a0The work is now\u00a0published\u00a0in the\u00a0special issue\u00a0on insecticides for mosquito control\u00a0in\u00a0the journal\u00a0<\/span>Insects<\/span><\/i><\/a>.\u00a0The publication\u00a0focuses on\u00a0the methods used to develop this\u00a0set of optimized SOPs,\u00a0which\u00a0assess\u00a0the bioefficacy of nets containing\u00a0a pyrethroid plus either\u00a0chlorfenapyr, PBO\u00a0or\u00a0PPF. The methods and SOPs have been discussed and agreed with all the relevant stakeholders.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr.\u00a0Natalie Lissenden<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0a\u00a0postdoctoral scientist\u00a0in the Vector Biology department at LSTM and<\/span>\u00a0lead author for the paper, stated:\u00a0\u201cThis was an iterative process which drew on the collective practical knowledge of researchers who have experience testing these products in the lab and field. Developing durability SOPs is a careful\u00a0and\u00a0balancing act between what data can feasibly be collected, what is needed for procurement decisions, and what would be valuable for future product development. The next steps of this process will be to formally validate these SOPs using data generated from ongoing field studies.\u00a0\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
